ESP Reading and Technical Literacy in Heavy Equipment Mechanical Engineering Students

This monograph discusses ESP reading and technical literacy for Heavy Equipment Mechanical Engineering students from a workplace literacy perspective. It argues that English reading in vocational higher education should not be limited to general comprehension, vocabulary recognition, or translation. In heavy equipment contexts, students need to read technical documents that contain procedures, warnings, cautions, conditions, diagrams, specifications, and troubleshooting information.

The book explains how technical reading functions as a bridge between language learning and workplace preparation. It discusses technical procedure texts, Operation and Maintenance Manuals, shop manuals, classroom-workplace reading gaps, empirical insights from ESP reading needs, and principles for designing workplace-oriented ESP reading instruction.
